After a prolonged saga, a replica of the original statue of Pádraic Ó' Conaire is to return to Eyre Square following an eleven year absence. The original statue of the famed Irish literary giant dominated the top of the Square since it was unveiled by Eamon de Valera in 1935. The sculpture was a top attraction for visitors to Galway, many of whom had their photograph taken alongside the writer.

With the first water tax bills arriving in homes over the coming days and weeks, the Galway We Won’t Pay campaign has vowed to step up its activities, and is calling for “a mass boycott of the bills” in an effort to defeat the controversial charges.

More than chocolate was on offer for the estimated 78,000 visitors who satisfied their culinary appetite at the fourth Galway Food Festival over the Easter weekend.

The launch of the programme for the fourth Galway Food Festival was held on Monday March 9 in one of Galway’s coolest new hangout spots, Bite Club. Celebrating Galway as a food destination, the festival strives to highlight the importance of food provenance and sustainability. Many of the great and the good of the Galway food scene were present — chefs, producers, restaurateurs, educators, and food writers. One of the best things about the launch being in Bite Club was the refreshments — spicy tacos, hot wings, and poitin slushies were the order of the day. It certainly made a difference to the usual smoked salmon on brown bread and a glass of pinot gris. A huge amount of organising goes into the festival, with the committee members and many others giving freely of their time and expertise to make it a success. More than 60 food related events will take place in hotels, restaurants, cafes, and shops throughout Galway city and county during Easter weekend. Fifty shades of kale, the Twelve Apostles, Cava on the Corrib, and Easter-themed afternoon teas are just some of the fun activities planned.

The public are being asked to take their Irish Water bills and deposit them in a coffin as a mark of protest, to take place in Galway next week, against both the highly mistrusted body and the Government’s water charges.

The Galway Food festival now in its 4th year will take place over the Easter bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Monday 6th April.

A public engagement campaign is underway as Galway bids to win the European Capital of Culture 2020 designation. Following the success of the first ‘Speak Out’ held recently, a second event will take place in Galway Arts Centre, Lower Dominick Street tonight Thursday March 19. These ‘Speak Out’ events are part of a comprehensive public engagement programme taking place throughout Galway city and county over the coming months.

ON TUESDAY evening at the House Hotel the programme for the 2015 Cúirt International Literature Festival was officially launched and, as ever, there is a rich feast of readings, talks, workshops, launches, and more to look forward to.

There aren’t many machines that can keep going all day. Or workers. Or products. Legislation wouldn’t permit it. For that matter there aren’t many towns that can offer as much at night as they do during the day. When darkness falls, the natural attractions which bring people into places are shrouded in a lack of light and rendered inhospitable. Rare are the places that are equally welcoming by day and by night.
